History of Vizcaya Miami

The Creation of Vizcaya

Businessman James Deering was the owner and founder of this villa. It is a dream to build this winter villa as his personal sanctuary, as he faced the problem of Armenia, and doctors strictly gave them instructions to live in a warm area. That is why James Deering created one of the most outstanding historic landmarks in Florida. He hired two people to build his villa. First is the famous architect Francis Burrall Hoffman, who designed the structure of Vijaya Villa, and another one is the famous landscape designer Diego Suarez, who designed and constructed the beautiful garden of the famous Villa Vizcaya of Florida. The construction of the villa started in 1914 and was completed in 1922. He used to recognise, host lavish parties, and events after the completion of this villa.

Ownership and Transformation

Spending some grateful time in his dream villa, James Deering died in 1925. After that, the ownership of the villa was transferred to the little brother of James Deering, Charles Deering, who later died in 1927. The ownership and responsibilities of Vijaya Villa were given into the hands of Deering’s nieces, who are Marion Deering McCricken and Barbara Deering Danielson. In 1927, a strong hurricane occurred, because of which the beautiful gardens and the villa were severely damaged. To repair this villa, Deering’s relatives call Paul Chalfin to fix all the damage. Before selling this property to Miami-Dade County, Deering’s relatives donated all the furniture and art in the gardens. He fixed all the damage and, after the sale, turned this villa into a museum in 1952. In 1953, Vizcaya opened as a public museum and became a historic landmark.
