Sprinter Van
The easiest vehicle in Newport's tight streets and the go-to for airport runs and wedding parties.
Sprinter van rental →Rhode Island is small enough to cross before your coffee cools, yet tricky enough that one wrong turn can put a 45-foot coach on a Newport street where buses are not allowed. BUSXOXO books charter buses, minibuses and Sprinter vans with professional drivers across the Ocean State, from Providence and Warwick to Newport, Bristol, Narragansett, Westerly and the ferry docks at Point Judith. We sort out the bridges, the drop-off zones and the parking before your group boards.
Live support around the clock. No payment needed to get a price.
The quick version
Most Rhode Island trips are short. Providence to Newport is roughly a 30 to 45 minute drive, and almost nothing in the state is more than an hour from the capital. That means hourly minimums, not mileage, usually decide your price. Pick the vehicle by headcount first, then fill the hours you are already paying for.
| Riders | Vehicle | Typical rate |
|---|---|---|
| 8–14 | Sprinter van | $105–$210/hr |
| 15–35 | Minibus | $120–$250/hr |
| 36–56 | Motorcoach | $145–$325/hr |
| 57+ | Two vehicles | Billed per vehicle |
Buses usually book in 5-hour blocks and vans in 4-hour blocks. Gratuity and the Pell Bridge toll are extra. Full breakdown on our charter bus rental cost page.
Geography first
Narragansett Bay pushes almost 30 miles into the state and breaks Rhode Island into pieces: the western mainland with Providence, Warwick and South County; Aquidneck Island with Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth; Conanicut Island with Jamestown; and the East Bay towns of Bristol, Warren, Tiverton and Little Compton. A bus can reach all of them, but only by bridge, and each bridge has its own personality.
Jamestown to Newport, the fastest way in from Warwick, the airport or anywhere on I-95 south of Providence. All tolling is electronic: $2 per axle with E-ZPass, $3 per axle when billed by plate, charged on each crossing. See current rates at RITBA.
Carries RI-138 from North Kingstown onto Jamestown. It is the first half of the Route 4 approach to the Pell Bridge and adds no toll.
The back doors to Aquidneck Island. Mount Hope links Bristol to Portsmouth; the Sakonnet River Bridge links Tiverton to Portsmouth and is the natural route for groups coming down Route 24 from Boston or Fall River.
Providence to East Providence. The westbound span closed in December 2023 and is being rebuilt, with reopening targeted for late 2028. The eastbound span carries traffic both ways, so build extra time into any westbound run into Providence.

Rhode Island is not one of the markets listed separately on our pricing guide, so quotes here start from the national ranges below. Where your date falls, how far the bus travels empty to reach you and whether the trip crosses the Pell Bridge decide where in each range you land. Every BUSXOXO quote lists those pieces separately.

45 riders · motorcoach · Boston to Newport mansions and back · 10-hour day · ordinary weekday
About $34–$80 per rider. The same day from Hartford or New York would add the Pell Bridge: about $12 round trip for a 3-axle coach with E-ZPass.
Plus $4–$6 for the Pell Bridge. The block covers flight delays and a stop for groceries on the way.
Two stops, one lunch break, back before dismissal. A school bus can come in lower.
Includes the late return run. Add an hour if the reception moves locations.
Or book two short transfers instead of a waiting bus. We price both so you can compare.
About an hour each way, plus time on the river. Pick-up point set near the basin.
Before tolls and any empty return miles. Multi-day tours are quoted per day instead.
Providence, zone by zone
Providence packs a state capital, a convention center, an arena, six colleges and a river festival into a few square miles of steep, one-way streets. The trick is agreeing on the exact curb before the bus arrives. Here is how we split the city when we plan pickups.
The Rhode Island Convention Center, Amica Mutual Pavilion, Providence Place and the big downtown hotels sit within a few blocks of each other. This is where conference shuttles and game-day fan buses start.
Curb tip: use a hotel porte-cochère or the venue's own loading area, confirmed in writing. Downtown blocks are short and enforcement is quick.
The Rhode Island State House at 82 Smith Street stands beside Providence Station, where Amtrak and MBTA commuter trains stop. School groups and train-arriving conference groups both start here.
Curb tip: groups of ten or more must book a State House tour in advance. See State House tours.
Brown University, RISD and its museum, and Benefit Street's historic houses fill the East Side. Admissions tours, parents' weekends and commencement keep this zone busy each spring.
Curb tip: the hill is steep and many streets are narrow. A coach usually meets the group on a wider avenue, and riders walk the last block.
Atwells Avenue is the city's dining street for rehearsal dinners, team banquets and bachelor parties. Evenings are crowded, and parallel parking is everywhere.
Curb tip: a Sprinter or minibus fits better than a coach here. We set one pickup point and a firm last-call time.
The zoo, the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium, the carousel and the botanical center make this the city's top field-trip destination. Providence public school students visiting with their school get free zoo admission from September through June.
Curb tip: zoo security directs buses to parking on arrival. Group rules are in the zoo's group visit pages.
T.F. Green Airport, its InterLink rail station and the hotel cluster along Post Road form the southern edge of the metro. Corporate groups often base here for quick runs into the city or down to Newport.
Curb tip: airport pickups use the commercial curb. More on that in the arrivals section below.
On full-lighting nights, more than 80 braziers burn along Providence's downtown rivers from sunset to midnight, and tens of thousands of people pour into downtown. Buses that pick up after 9 p.m. need a meeting point a few blocks from the river and a little patience.
Planning for next season? Watch the official WaterFire schedule and book transportation the week dates are released.
The westbound Washington Bridge, which carries I-195 from East Providence into the city, closed in December 2023 and is being rebuilt. The eastbound span carries traffic both ways, and the new westbound bridge is targeted to open by late 2028.
Newport, the rulebook
Newport is more than 375 years old, and its streets were laid out for carriages. The city and Discover Newport publish a motorcoach map that shows where buses may unload, which streets are off limits and how to approach from each direction. Below is our plain-English summary of the current edition. Drivers should still carry the official Touring Newport by Motorcoach guide.
From Boston or Providence, the guide routes buses down Route 24 and Route 138, then along Aquidneck Avenue and Memorial Boulevard into America's Cup Avenue, with no bridge toll.
The Preservation Society of Newport County schedules group visits to these houses, with self-guided tours on its free audio app:
At The Breakers, a motorcoach lane runs around the edge of the visitor lot. Coaches pull to the left side of that lane and unload there. Parking is free onsite at most Preservation Society properties. Details on the society's group tours page.
Planning a wedding at a Bellevue Avenue or Ocean Drive estate? Ask the venue which vehicle sizes its gate and driveway take. We often recommend minibuses for these properties; see our wedding bus rental page.
The Newport Folk Festival (July 24–26, 2026) and Newport Jazz Festival (July 31–August 2, 2026) both fill Fort Adams State Park and sell out fast. Book festival shuttles from Providence or Boston hotels once tickets go on sale. Our concert and festival bus page covers how we stage pickups.
Arrivals
Most groups reach Rhode Island by plane into Warwick, by train into Providence or Kingston, or by flying into Boston and riding south. Each arrival point has its own rules about where a charter vehicle may wait, and getting that right is the difference between a smooth meet and a lot of rolling suitcases.
About six miles south of downtown Providence. The airport's ground transportation rules apply to every commercial vehicle on airport roads: the operator needs a valid state certificate or federal USDOT authority, drivers may not solicit riders, and loading happens only at the designated commercial curb.
TSA rules keep vehicles from waiting in front of the terminal, so your driver stages nearby and pulls in when the group is together at baggage claim.
Amtrak's Northeast Corridor trains and MBTA commuter rail from Boston stop here, right below the State House. It is the easiest arrival point for groups coming from New York, Washington or Boston without driving.
We confirm the exact pickup curb with you in advance, time it to the scheduled arrival and watch for train delays on the day.
The Amtrak stop closest to the University of Rhode Island and the Point Judith ferry terminal, which makes it useful for Block Island groups and URI visitors arriving by train.
It is a small station, so share your car and coach count in advance and keep the meeting point simple.
Flight numbers, names and bag counts go to dispatch so the vehicle size is right.
Delays shift the pickup time inside your booked block, so nobody waits at the curb.
One leader counts heads while bags come off the belt.
The driver moves from staging to the commercial curb.
Bags in the bays, final head count, then south to Newport or north to the city.
Flying into Boston Logan instead? A coach covers the roughly 60 miles to Providence in about an hour and a quarter outside rush hour. Our airport charter bus page explains meet-and-greet options, and the guide to groups arriving on different flights shows how to batch pickups into waves.
South County & the islands
South of Warwick, Rhode Island turns into beach towns, salt ponds and the fishing port of Galilee. This is where wedding guests head for ocean-view venues, where URI families come for move-in weekends and where day-trippers catch the boat to Block Island. Buses do a lot of waiting here, so the plan has to account for parking as much as driving.
Built around the Point Judith terminal at 304 Great Island Road in Narragansett. Times are a template; we match them to the sailing you book.
Group package details, including motorcoach parking, are on the Block Island Ferry site.
The stone Towers arch over Ocean Road and host many summer receptions. Expect to drop guests close to the door and park the bus away from the seawall during events.
Orientation, move-in, Rams games and admissions visits all bring buses to Kingston. Ask the campus event office for the bus loading area, which changes by event.
Victorian Watch Hill and the long Misquamicut beach strip sit at the Connecticut line, easy for groups coming up I-95 from Mystic. Watch Hill's village streets are narrow; a minibus is the comfortable size.
A harbor village of 18th-century houses and small shops, a gentle half-day stop between Providence and Narragansett for senior groups and garden clubs.
Our guides to Rhode Island beaches and coastal towns in Rhode Island pair well with a South County group day.
Beyond the big two
Newport and Providence get the headlines, but plenty of our Rhode Island trips start or end somewhere quieter. Pick a region to see what groups book there and what the driver needs to know.
Bristol sits on a narrow peninsula between Narragansett and Mount Hope bays. It is a harbor town of brick sidewalks and sea captains' houses, home to Roger Williams University, and famous for a Fourth of July celebration that dates back to the 1780s.
The Discover Newport motorcoach guide includes a Bristol map, which tells you how often tour groups pair the two towns over the Mount Hope Bridge.
Bus note: on and around July 4th, the parade route shuts Hope Street and the side streets fill early. We stage parade groups outside the center and walk them in.
East of the Sakonnet River, the land turns into stone walls, farm stands and vineyards. Tiverton Four Corners has galleries and an ice cream shop with a following, and Little Compton's commons looks like a postcard of old New England.
Groups coming from Boston or Fall River cross into Aquidneck Island here on the free Sakonnet River Bridge.
Bus note: country roads are narrow with few shoulders. Minibuses handle winery and farm stops better than full coaches, and the driver needs the exact gate address for each stop.
North of Providence, the Blackstone River powered some of the first mills in America. Pawtucket's Slater Mill is now part of the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park, a strong pick for history classes and heritage tours.
This corridor is also home to Bally's Twin River Lincoln, Bryant University in Smithfield and the mill-town restaurants of Woonsocket.
Bus note: I-95 and Route 146 make these towns quick to reach from Providence, Worcester or Boston, which suits short school and casino blocks.
Two of the state's largest cities wrap around the airport and give groups a cheaper hotel base than downtown Providence or Newport in high season. Many visiting sports teams stay here and bus to games and tournaments around the state.
Warwick also has the bay beaches and parks of Oakland Beach and Goddard Memorial State Park.
Bus note: Post Road and Route 2 are heavy with shopping traffic on weekends. We plan morning departures to get ahead of it.

Rhode Island is the hub for a lot of New England group travel: Boston and Hartford groups come down for Newport, Rhode Island groups head out to Connecticut casinos and Patriots games. What groups book
The same coach can carry a wedding party on Saturday and a debate team on Monday, but the plan behind each trip is different. These are the trip types we arrange most in Rhode Island, and what each one tends to need.
Rhode Island hosts a remarkable number of destination weddings for its size, from Gilded Age ballrooms on Bellevue Avenue to beach clubs in Narragansett and vineyard barns in Little Compton. Most need a loop between two or three hotels, the ceremony and the reception, then a staggered late return.

When to go, when to book
Rhode Island's bus calendar follows the coast. Winter is quiet except for college sports and holiday outings, spring brings school trips and graduations, and summer through October is wedding and festival season. The color bar shows how hard it is to find a vehicle that month.

Spring sports travel and early school trips start to book up.
Field trip season opens. State House tour slots fill quickly.

Fall foliage tours, more weddings, college homecomings.
Final WaterFire lighting, holiday shopping trips, Thanksgiving travel.
Holiday tours of the Newport mansions and company parties.
Coastal storms and nor'easters are the main disruption from December through March, and summer thunderstorms can briefly close beaches. The National Weather Service office in Norton, Massachusetts covers Rhode Island; check its forecast page two days out.
High winds can also affect the Pell Bridge and the Block Island ferry. If either looks doubtful, we will help you move the day, switch to a route over the free bridges or swap the island trip for a mainland one. Our return and refund policy explains how weather cancellations are handled.
Know before you book
None of these should worry you, because handling them is our job. But knowing them helps you read a quote, ask the right questions and spot an operator who is cutting corners.
Rhode Island's public motor vehicle law exempts charter carriers from its own certificate, so the key check for a charter bus is federal. Ask for the operator's USDOT number and look it up on FMCSA SAFER.
FMCSA SAFER lookupBus drivers may drive 10 hours after 8 hours off, inside a 15-hour on-duty window. Long days from New York or overnight returns may need a second driver or a hotel stop.
Who pays for the driver's hotelState rules limit unnecessary diesel idling to five consecutive minutes in any 60. In freezing weather, idling for heat is allowed up to 15 minutes an hour. Newport sets its own five-minute limit for standing buses.
RIDEM anti-idlingThe driver of a rented bus or limousine is exempt from the open-container law only if neither the driver nor any passenger under 21 has an open drink. The operator's own alcohol policy still applies.
R.I. Gen. Laws § 31-22-21.1The Newport Pell Bridge is all-electronic: $2 per axle with E-ZPass, $3 per axle by mail, every crossing. All other Rhode Island bridges on bus routes are free.
RITBA toll ratesCommercial buses over 5,500 pounds tare weight may not use the streets marked restricted on Newport's motorcoach map, and buses unload only at designated stops.
Discover Newport motorcoach infoAt T.F. Green, commercial vehicles need a state certificate or USDOT authority, may not solicit and load only at the designated commercial curb.
RIAC ground transportation rulesThe westbound Washington Bridge is being replaced, with a late-2028 target. Expect slower westbound returns into Providence until then.
