History of The Grove Museum

The Grove Mansion has a remarkable history as a private family home that evolved over seven generations before becoming one of Florida’s most important historic sites.

Construction of the Mansion

This mansion was built by Richard Keith Call between 1835 and 1840. He was a businessman, politician and Florida’s third and fifth territorial governor. This Greek Revival-style brick home was built with highly skilled craftsmanship of enslaved African Americans. Well, according to the 1840 Census, Call owned 66 people, of whom 30 people worked in manufacturing and handmade the bricks used in the construction of the mansion. 

Generational Shifts

In 1851, Governor Call transferred the mansion to his daughter Ellen Call Long. Later, at the start of the 20th century, the mansion passed to Call’s granddaughter Reinette Long Hunt. Lastly, the final owners of this mansion were Governor LeRoy Collins and his wife Mary Call Collins (the great-granddaughter of Call). This mansion has witnessed seven generations of the Call family before turning into a museum.

Conversion into a Public Museum

To preserve the legacy and history of this mansion, LeRoy and Mary Call Collins decided to transfer this property to the State of Florida. But under a life estate agreement, they could only use this property after their death. LeRoy died in the year 1991, and Mary died in 2009. So after 2009, the Florida Department of State started a historical preservation project in which they restored the mansion in an eco-friendly way. Later, it became one of the great museums in Tallahassee and even in America. Also, this mansion got a LEED certification for its sustainable design. And finally, in March 2017, The Grove Museum was officially opened to the public.
