Idaho Charter Bus Rental With a Driver

Idaho is a long, mountainous state with two time zones and just one highway inside the state linking its north and south. We plan around that. Tell us your headcount and where you are going, and we will match you with a 56-seat motorcoach, a minibus or a Sprinter van run by a licensed operator, from Boise and the Treasure Valley to Sun Valley, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls and Coeur d'Alene.

The Short Answer for Idaho Group Trips

Quick answerMost Idaho charters run $105–$210 an hour for a Sprinter van, $120–$250 for a minibus and $145–$325 for a full-size coach, with 4- or 5-hour minimums. The bigger planning question here is distance: Boise to Coeur d'Alene is a full driving day, so the right vehicle and the right driver plan matter as much as the hourly rate.

Groups usually book a bus in Idaho for one of four reasons: a ski or river weekend in the central mountains, a school or church trip in the Treasure Valley, a Yellowstone run out of eastern Idaho, or a lake wedding in the Panhandle. Each one plays out differently on the road. This page walks through the state region by region, with real rules, road notes and sample prices, so you can build a realistic request before you ask for a quote.

BUSXOXO is a booking partner, not a single bus yard. We place your trip with a licensed local operator whose garage is closest to your pickup, check its federal safety record, and stay on the line from quote to drop-off. That model matters in a state this spread out: the best coach for a Sandpoint wedding and the best coach for a Pocatello school trip rarely come from the same company. Read more about how we work.

If you only need the pricing logic, our charter bus rental cost guide explains minimums, mileage billing and gratuity in detail.

Two Idahos, One Highway Between Them

Look at any road atlas and you will see why Idaho trips need more planning than their mileage suggests. Interstate 84 serves the south, Interstate 90 crosses the Panhandle, and Interstate 15 runs up the east side toward Montana. No interstate joins north and south. The connection inside the state is US-95, a two-lane highway for long stretches that climbs through river canyons, timber country and farm towns.

The state also changes clocks partway up. Everything north of the Salmon River, including Coeur d'Alene, Sandpoint, Moscow and Lewiston, keeps Pacific Time. Boise, Twin Falls, Sun Valley and Idaho Falls keep Mountain Time. A pickup "at 9" means two different moments depending on which side of the river the venue sits.

  • 01Write the time zone next to every time. Put "MT" or "PT" on each pickup in your itinerary. It is the simplest way to stop a north–south trip from starting an hour early or late.
  • 02Treat Boise to Coeur d'Alene as a full day. It is roughly 380 miles and about seven and a half hours in good weather. Book it as a one-way transfer or an overnight, not a "day trip".
  • 03Mountain routes set the winter calendar. SH-75 over Galena Summit, US-95 north of New Meadows and I-90 over Fourth of July and Lookout passes can slow or close in a storm. Leave slack on the return.
  • 04Neighbor-state airports often win. Panhandle groups usually fly into Spokane, Washington, and eastern Idaho groups sometimes into Salt Lake City or Jackson. Crossing a state line means the operator needs federal interstate authority, which we check.

Step 1 · size the ride

Match Your Headcount and Terrain to a Vehicle

In most states the seat count picks the bus. In Idaho the cargo and the terrain also have a say. Ski bags, rafting dry bags and hunting-season coolers fill a van fast, and long mountain grades favor a coach with a restroom. Set your group below to see where we would start, or browse the full vehicle lineup.

What a Charter Bus Costs in Idaho

Idaho is not one of the metro markets on our national rate table, so the numbers below use our standard ranges. Boise and Coeur d'Alene trips tend to land in the middle. Ski and river seasonHoliday ski weeks and July rafting weekends book early. Midweek dates in shoulder season are the cheapest.
Long one-waysTrips like Boise to Coeur d'Alene are billed by the mile, and the bus may need to return empty. Pairing with a return group saves money.

Southwest Idaho

Boise and the Treasure Valley, Zone by Zone

Most Idaho charters start in the Treasure Valley, the string of cities from Boise west through Meridian, Nampa and Caldwell. Distances are short, but each venue has its own curb habits. Here is what drivers and group leaders should know before pickup day. Our general bus parking and pickup guidelines apply everywhere; the notes below are the Boise-specific layer.

TV-1

Downtown & the Capitol

Conventions, legislative visits and school civics trips. The Idaho State Capitol runs guided tours for groups of five or more, with a cap of about 60 people per time slot.

Request guided Capitol tours at least two weeks ahead. Drop riders at the curb and let the driver wait off-site; downtown meters are closely watched.
Best fit: minibus or coach
TV-2

Old Pen & the Foothills

The Old Idaho Penitentiary is one of only four territorial prisons open to the public and a favorite for fourth grade and up. Groups of ten or more get a small discount.

Buses park in the gravel lot at the base of the Foothills trailhead. The upper lot is not for unloading unless the site has agreed in advance.
Best fit: school bus or coach
TV-3

Boise State & game days

Albertsons Stadium and ExtraMile Arena draw heavy traffic on football Saturdays and concert nights. Roads around campus slow down hours before kickoff.

Agree on a drop point away from the stadium crush and a fixed post-game meeting spot. A free downtown game-day shuttle runs, so some groups park downtown and ride in.
Best fit: coach for fan clubs
TV-4

Meridian & Nampa

The valley's fastest-growing suburbs, with sports complexes, churches and the Ford Idaho Center, home to concerts and the Snake River Stampede rodeo.

Tournament weekends fill hotel lots. Ask hotels where a 45-foot coach can stage before you book rooms.
Best fit: minibus or shuttle bus
TV-5

Eagle, Garden City & the Greenbelt

Riverside wedding venues, corporate picnics and taprooms along the Boise River Greenbelt. Many venues sit on narrow residential streets.

Send the venue address and a photo of the entry to your operator. Long coaches may need to unload on the main road.
Best fit: 30-seat minibus
TV-6

Caldwell & Sunnyslope

Wineries above the Snake River near Caldwell make a popular half-day tour, along with farm stands and fall harvest events.

Gravel driveways and tight tasting-room lots favor smaller vehicles. Our food and drink guide covers onboard rules.
Best fit: Sprinter or minibus
BOI

Boise Airport. Most ground transportation, including pre-booked group pickups, works from the lower-level roadway outside baggage claim. Commercial vehicles at the airport are regulated under Boise City Code, so your operator needs the right airport permit. For groups landing on several flights, our guide to airport transfers for staggered arrivals shows how to set pickup waves. See also our airport charter service.

South-central Idaho

Magic Valley: Canyons, Waterfalls and Lava Fields

Twin Falls sits on the rim of the Snake River Canyon about two hours east of Boise on I-84, and it anchors one of the best one-day bus loops in the West. Two stops dominate group requests. Both reward a little homework on fees and parking.

Twin Falls · city park

Shoshone Falls

At 212 feet, the "Niagara of the West" drops farther than Niagara itself. Flow depends on the winter snowpack and the irrigation season, so spring is reliably the showiest time to visit and late summer can be a trickle.

Fees per the City of Twin Falls.

  • $20tour bus gate fee in fee season
  • $5school bus full of children
  • 5pull-through spots for RVs and tour buses
  • Mar 1vehicle fees start; waived in winter
The park road descends a winding grade into the canyon. Tell your operator the bus length so the driver can plan the turn-in, and arrive early on spring weekends when the five long-vehicle spots fill.

Plan the rest of the day with our Shoshone Falls guide and Idaho waterfalls list.

Near Arco · national monument

Craters of the Moon

A volcanic landscape of lava flows, cinder cones and lava tubes, roughly midway between Boise and Yellowstone. The visitor center sits about 18 miles southwest of Arco on US-20/26/93, and a 7-mile loop road links the main stops.

  • 5vehicles max for education groups
  • 1vehicle max for education groups in winter
  • 7 miscenic loop road
  • $0entry when the loop is closed
Commercial vehicles pay a separate entrance fee based on vehicle type. Accredited schools can apply for an academic fee waiver, but it is not automatic. Apply well before your trip. Current rates are on the NPS fees page, and school rules on its field trip page.

Perrine BridgeThe northern gateway to Twin Falls, with a visitor center on the south side off US-93. An easy first stop to stretch.
Timing the loopBoise to Twin Falls, the falls, then Craters and home is a long day. Many groups split it into two.
Pack for lavaBlack rock gets hot in July. Bring water and closed shoes for cave trails.
Dark skiesCraters is an International Dark Sky Park, which makes an evening return memorable for school groups.

Central Idaho mountains

Sun Valley, the Sawtooths and McCall

The central mountains are where Idaho charters earn their keep. Ski clubs, wedding parties, rafting outfits and executive retreats all head this way, and almost every trip involves serious elevation. The ladder on the right follows the classic Boise to Stanley run so you can see where the climbs are.

Sun Valley and Ketchum fill up on holiday ski weeks, summer music and film events, and fall conference season. Most groups want a coach with luggage bays for skis or golf bags, or an executive coach for leadership offsites.

Stanley and Redfish Lake sit beyond Galena Summit in the Sawtooth Valley. Summer rafting groups often ride a coach to Stanley and switch to the outfitter's vans at the river. Cell service is patchy from Galena north, so print the itinerary and outfitter phone numbers.

McCall and Payette Lake lie about two hours north of Boise on SH-55, a canyon road that follows the Payette River. It is a favorite for lake weddings and church camps. Browse our Idaho lakes guide and small towns list for stops.

Mountain day checklist

  • Tell us about ski bags, boards or dry bags so we size the luggage bays, not just the seats.
  • Count the driver's waiting time. A full ski day is on-duty time even when the bus is parked, so a 6 a.m. Boise departure can bump against the 15-hour on-duty limit.
  • Check Idaho 511 the night before and the morning of travel for SH-75 and SH-55, and the National Weather Service in Boise for mountain forecasts.
  • Build a weather plan B, such as a later return or a hotel night, into your contract.
  • ~2,700 ftstartBoise. Load at the hotel or school. I-84 east toward Mountain Home.
  • ~5,000 ftprairieUS-20 across the Camas Prairie. Open farm country, wind and drifting snow in winter.
  • ~5,900 ftresortKetchum and Sun Valley. Ski lifts, hotels and the turnaround for most day trips.
  • 7,290 ftlodgeGalena Lodge. Nordic skiing on the Ketchum side of the summit, a good warm-up stop.
  • 8,701 ftsummitGalena Summit. Highest highway pass in the Northwest, about 29 miles from Ketchum. Narrow shoulders, sharp curves, winter whiteouts.
  • 7,190 ftvalleySawtooth Valley. The highway drops to the headwaters of the Salmon River.
  • ~6,250 ftriverStanley. Rafting launches, Redfish Lake and the junction with SH-21 back toward Boise.

Elevations are approximate and for planning only.

Eastern Idaho

Idaho Falls, Pocatello and the Yellowstone Gateways

Eastern Idaho is the state's launch pad for Yellowstone and Grand Teton. From Idaho Falls a coach can reach West Yellowstone, Jackson Hole or the Salt Lake City airport in a few hours. Each gateway comes with its own rules, and one of them changed this month.

Gateway 1 · north

West Yellowstone

US-20 via Island Park

The most direct bus route from Idaho Falls and Rexburg into the park's west entrance, about two hours of driving in summer.

Island Park and Harriman State Park make good stretch stops. In winter, check snow conditions along Targhee Pass before committing to a schedule.

Gateway 2 · east

Jackson via Teton Pass

ID-33 to WY-22

Teton Pass is short but steep, with roughly three miles of 10% grade. Wyoming keeps a 60,000-pound weight limit on it at all times.

New since October 1, 2026: Wyoming's WY22 SAFE PASS program requires drivers of vehicles rated over 10,000 pounds to complete a free online self-certification before crossing. That covers motorcoaches and minibuses. Certification lasts a year; drivers without it must detour. Details at safepass.wyoroad.info.
Gateway 3 · south

Salt Lake City

I-15 via Pocatello

Many eastern Idaho tours start with a flight into Salt Lake City. From the airport, I-15 north reaches Pocatello in about two and a half hours and Idaho Falls in under four.

Because the trip crosses a state line, the operator needs federal interstate authority. We verify it before booking.

Taking a coach into Yellowstone

Tour buses with 16 or more seats enter Yellowstone by paying a commercial tour fee at the gate, set by the vehicle's seat count rather than by headcount. If a company packages and sells the tour, that company also needs a National Park Service Commercial Use Authorization. A plain charter, where your group hires the bus and plans its own stops, is handled differently, so tell us which kind of trip you are running.

Driver hours matter here too. Yellowstone loops are long, and wildlife jams eat time. Our guide to when a trip needs two drivers explains the math, and our national park tour guide covers the rest. For trip ideas, see Yellowstone National Park and Yellowstone gateway towns.

  • Idaho Falls. Snake River Greenbelt, the falls downtown and family museums. The main hub for Yellowstone-bound groups.
  • Rexburg. Home of BYU–Idaho, with campus visits, student events and quick access to Island Park.
  • Pocatello. University sports, conference travel and the I-15/I-86 junction toward Twin Falls.
  • Driggs and Victor. Teton Valley weddings and ski days at Grand Targhee, just across the Wyoming line.

North Idaho · Pacific Time

Coeur d'Alene, Sandpoint and the Panhandle

The Panhandle looks west to Spokane more than south to Boise. It keeps Pacific Time, most visitors fly into Spokane International, and summer revolves around lakes. Wedding planners, camp directors and theme-park groups make up most of the bus requests here.

Coeur d'Alene

Lake resort city on I-90

Lakefront resorts, golf and the downtown waterfront host a large share of the state's destination weddings. Plan hotel-to-ceremony loops with our wedding shuttle schedule template.

Silverwood

Athol, on US-95

The Northwest's largest theme and water park sits about half an hour north of Coeur d'Alene. Camps and youth groups book minibuses or coaches for summer day trips. Read our Silverwood guide.

Sandpoint

Lake Pend Oreille

Idaho's largest lake, a ski hill above town and summer festivals. It sits farther up US-95, so build in time for two-lane traffic in July and August.

Silver Valley

Kellogg & Wallace on I-90

Historic mining towns, a gondola ski area and bike trail groups. East of here, I-90 climbs to Lookout Pass and the Montana line.

Moscow

University of Idaho

Campus visits, Vandal athletics and a short hop to Pullman, Washington. Cross-border games mean interstate trips even for short distances.

Lewiston

Snake & Clearwater rivers

Idaho's inland port and the gateway to Hells Canyon jet-boat tours. Clarkston, Washington is just across the bridge.

North-central Idaho deserves its own note. Moscow and Lewiston sit on US-95 roughly halfway between Coeur d'Alene and Boise, and both lean on Washington neighbors: Pullman for university events and Clarkston for shopping and the regional airport. Groups traveling from Boise to a Vandals game or a Hells Canyon jet-boat trip should plan the White Bird Hill grade south of Grangeville and the Salmon River canyon near Riggins, where the clock also changes. A minibus often suits these smaller-town venues better than a full coach.

Winter passes on I-90 and US-12. Idaho's chain law applies to commercial vehicles over 26,000 pounds on Fourth of July Pass and Lookout Pass on I-90 and on Lolo Pass on US-12. When signs are lit, drivers must chain up; school buses are among the exemptions. Groups flying into Spokane should know that a pickup at the airport is an interstate trip, so the operator needs federal authority. See also our Washington charter bus page.

Idaho Drive Times and the Driver Plan Each One Needs

Federal rules let a passenger-carrying driver drive up to 10 hours after 8 hours off duty, and not after 15 hours on duty. The bar shows how much of that 10-hour driving allowance a one-way leg uses. Round trips double it, so anything past the halfway mark is a one-way, an overnight or a two-driver job.

Idaho rules of the road

Eight Idaho Rules That Shape a Charter Trip

These are the regulations and road facts that come up most when we plan Idaho trips. They are summaries for planning, not legal advice, so follow the source links for the full text.

Safety

Federal safety rules apply in-state too

Idaho State Police enforce motor carrier rules that bring intrastate for-hire carriers under the federal safety regulations. Ask any operator for its USDOT number and look it up.

Borders

Neighbor-state trips are interstate

Spokane, Jackson, Salt Lake City and Ontario, Oregon are all close to Idaho towns. Carrying passengers across those lines requires federal interstate operating authority.

We check authority before booking. See Safety & Trust.
Alcohol

Passengers only, never the driver

Idaho's open-container law exempts passengers in the passenger area of a vehicle used mainly to carry people for pay. The driver is never exempt, and each operator sets its own alcohol policy.

Idaho's hands-free law bars drivers from using a handheld device, even at a red light. Fines run $75, then $150, then $300. Pick one group contact who calls only when the bus is parked.

Questions we hear from Idaho planners

Idaho Charter Bus FAQs

How much does it cost to rent a charter bus in Idaho?

Typical ranges are $105–$210 an hour for a Sprinter van, $120–$250 for a minibus and $145–$325 for a 56-seat motorcoach, with 4- or 5-hour minimums. A full coach day runs about $1,400–$3,000, and long one-way trips are billed around $6.50–$8.00 per mile. Gratuity and park fees are extra.

Can a charter bus go from Boise to Coeur d'Alene and back in one day?

Not comfortably. The trip is roughly 380 miles each way on US-95 and takes about seven and a half hours, so a round trip would exceed one driver's 10-hour driving limit. Book it as a one-way transfer, an overnight trip or a two-driver run.

Which airport should groups visiting North Idaho use?

Most Panhandle groups fly into Spokane International in Washington, about 40 miles from Coeur d'Alene on I-90. Because the pickup crosses a state line, the bus operator must hold federal interstate authority, which we confirm when we book.

Can passengers drink alcohol on a charter bus in Idaho?

Idaho Code 23-505 exempts passengers riding in the passenger area of a vehicle used mainly to carry people for pay from the open-container ban. The driver is never exempt, riders must be 21 or older, and every operator can set stricter rules, so ask before you pack a cooler.

Do charter buses run to Sun Valley in winter?

Yes, ski groups travel from Boise to Sun Valley all winter on I-84, US-20 and SH-75. Expect slower travel on storm days, build an hour of slack into the return, and check Idaho 511 before leaving. Trips beyond Ketchum over Galena Summit need extra caution.

Can a motorcoach drive over Teton Pass to Jackson, Wyoming?

Usually yes, within Wyoming's 60,000-pound limit. Since October 1, 2026, drivers of vehicles rated over 10,000 pounds must also complete Wyoming's free WY22 SAFE PASS online certification before crossing. If the driver is not certified or the pass is closed, the bus detours through Alpine.

Can a charter bus take our group into Yellowstone?

Yes. Buses with 16 or more seats pay a commercial tour fee at the entrance based on seat count. If a company packages and sells your tour, that company also needs a National Park Service Commercial Use Authorization. Tell us how your trip is organized and we will plan around it.

Where do tour buses park at Shoshone Falls?

The park has five pull-through spots for RVs and tour buses for day use. In the fee season, tour buses pay about $20 at the gate and school buses full of children about $5. The road down into the canyon is winding, so arrive early on spring weekends.

How far in advance should we book an Idaho charter bus?

Book three to six months ahead for ski holidays, summer weddings and multi-coach events. For ordinary weekday trips, four to eight weeks is usually enough. Last-minute requests are possible; call us so we can check availability quickly.

What size bus do we need for 30 people?

A 30- to 35-passenger minibus is the usual fit for local trips. If your group carries skis, rafting gear or suitcases on a mountain trip, a full-size coach with luggage bays is often the better choice even though it has extra seats.

Is a school bus a good choice for an Idaho field trip?

For short runs, like a Boise school visiting the Capitol, a school bus offers the lowest cost per seat. For trips longer than about 90 minutes, such as Craters of the Moon, a coach with a restroom and reclining seats is more comfortable.

Do you serve small towns like Stanley, Salmon or Driggs?

Yes. We book licensed operators across Idaho, including rural towns. Remote pickups often add empty travel miles from the nearest bus yard, so share the exact address early for an accurate quote.
